Draw Poker Variants

Unlike community poker, draw poker is a collection of poker games wherein players are immediately dealt with a complete hand and are then permitted to replace them by drawing new cards. And in contrast with stud poker, draw poker deals players with an entire set of face-down cards. The player with the best hand at the final round wins.

Draw Poker Variants

Here are a number of draw poker variants you can expect to see in online poker sites. The number of cards drawn and the number of times a player is allowed to draw cards will depend on the rules of the particular poker variant they’re playing.

Standard Five-Card Draw

Although this is now played more often at home than in casinos, five-card draw is nonetheless one of the first draw poker variants that most players learn. Standard five-card draw may be played between two to eight players.

Badugi or Badougi

This poker variant is especially popular in South Korea so expect websites catering to Korean players to have this in their roster. While the rules are somewhat different, they are not difficult to learn.

A Badugi hand is made up of four cards at the most. Any cards that match in value or suit are immediately taken out of play. The highest hand is determined first according to the number of cards used and structure. Cards with A, 2, 3, and 4 and of varying suits is a good hand while a bad Badugi could be ten clubs, king hearts, jack hearts, and queen diamonds.

California Lowball

It was only with the rise of popularity of community and stud poker that California lowball’s fame slowly began to wane. Nevertheless, there are still a number of websites that do offer this exciting game to its players.

Unlike Gardenia jackpots, California is played without antes but blinds. Players are also only permitted to check during the second betting round. Furthermore, players with a 7-high hand or higher is excluded from winning money placed in the pot after the draw if he decides to check post-draw. If you check in the second round, you’re forbidden from raising on the same round. This rule isn’t, however, applied in games with no-limit or pot-limit formats.

Gardenia Jackpots

This game is also known as jackpots, jacks or better, or jacks to open. Gardenia jackpot has its roots in Gardenia, California. Its popularity was at its greatest during the 1930’s till the 1970’s although it was perennially second to California lowball.

Traditional hand values apply to Gardenia jackpots although a joker is used as a wildcard. In this game, players can only bet when they have at the very least a pair of jacks in their hands – hence the name ‘jacks to open’ – or something better. Once the betting has been opened, other players – including those who only opted to check – are now allowed to call the bet or go for a raise.

Players who have opened the betting round are encouraged to keep their discarded cards separate from the rest. In case their authority to open the betting is questioned, they’d have the means to prove their claim.

  2. There are just minor differences among the variants of online poker. The number of hole cards and the community cards vary in all the Variants of online poker. The distribution of cards also varies in all the variants of the game. The main goal to achieve in all these variants is the same and that is to produce the highest poker rank.
